Three women
artists will bring the words of a Pulitzer Prize-winning woman poet
to life through eurythmy, music and recitation in What Did She Say?
An Evening of Poetry by Mary Oliver, to be performed April 10 and
11 at the Rogers Park Theatre, 1300 W. Loyola in Chicago.
Mary Oliver's
work focuses on the details of nature, where she finds the essence
of the human condition. The New York Times has called Oliver's poems
"thoroughly convincing -- as genuine, moving and implausible
as the first caressing breeze of spring." Author James Dickey
says, "Mary Oliver works...a true spell, unlike any other poet's,
the enchantment of the true maker."
Actress Judith
Pownall, eurythmist Jeanne Simon-MacDonald and pianist Susan Buffington,
with guest musician/composer Gregor Simon-MacDonald, are to explore
a series of Oliver's poems collaboratively. Through their respective
art forms, they express the meaning, mood and style of each poem,
even the subtle variations of sound and rhythm within specific words,
phrases and lines, resulting in a performance that is alternately
playful and moving, even disturbing.
Eurythmy, a
sister stage art to dance and mime, is a unique art of movement
that makes speech and music visible through gestures, colors and
light, using the entire human body as the instrument of artistic
expression.
Chicago performances
are Saturday, April 10 at 7:30pm and Sunday, April 11 at 3:30pm
at the Rogers Park Theatre at the Chicago Waldorf School, 1300 West
Loyola, Chicago. Tickets are $12, $10 for students and seniors.
(Children under 14 will not be admitted.) For information and reservations,

"A SPRING SOLSTICE" CONCERT AT GLEN ELLYN
IS AS INNOVATIVE AS ITS NAME
The contemporary
instrumental music of local pianist and composer Ken Pedersen (known
for his innovative "Parameter Improvs") will celebrate
his new nationally-released album, Deja Views with A Spring Solstice
Concert: A Celebration of Hope on Wednesday, April 21 at 7:30pm
at the Glenbard South High School Auditorium in Glen Ellyn.
"Of course
there is no such thing as a 'spring solstice'," states Pedersen,
"but spring is a special time of the year when hope is rekindled
as warmth and rains bring...blossoms and greenery. A solstice is
a turning point, so we have declared a Spring Solstice as a time
to celebrate as well as reflect on what has gone before and what
the future holds."
Pedersen's music
bridges the formal elements of classical, the peace and repose of
"new acoustic," and the improvisatory nature of jazz.
He will perform at least two "Parameter Improvs" (structured
improvisations) at the concert, spontaneous compositions based upon
audience suggestions. Also, using randomly-selected notes as the
basis for his parameter improv he may leap into the unknown, developing
the main melody and counter-melodies as he goes.
Pedersen will
perform with wind and string instrumentalists from Glenbard South
High School. (Most are Illinois Music Educator Association winners.)
Allan Chambers, well-known Chicago-area musical theatre perform
and director will also join Pedersen onstage.
The Glenbard
South High School Auditorium is located at Park Avenue and Butterfield
Road (use Entrance 6).

2000 GOURD GARDENS FOR THE GODDESS - A MILLENNIUM PROJECT
TO HONOR THE EARTH AS MOTHER
Last fall, nearly
2000 people came to the Third Annual Goddess Gourd Festival at eco-subdivision
Prairie Crossing in Grayslake to celebrate harvest with the 14 gourd
gardeners and gourd artists from around the country. Now that it's
springtime, Joan Riise, co-founder with Lenny Feldberg of this burgeoning
project, acknowledge the need of so many of us to work together
in community to create gardens dedicated to the growing of gourds.
This year instead
of one local community garden growing gourds, Joan and Lenny are
making the effort to make a global garden planted and tended in
the name of Mother Earth.
Why gourds?
As the oldest cultivated plant on earth, they are cross cultural
vessels holding the stories of our history from one millennium to
the next. Why Goddess? To honor the Earth as Mother; to see in the
gourd the fertile symbol of woman protecting her seeds, assuring
the existence of future generations.
By initiating
with intent we can learn by observing, respond intuitively and exchange
information, thereby raising the quality of knowledge on a broad
scale. By working in community, we can explore and share our common
roots. After all is said and done, Joan reminds us, it still takes
a village ...
Who can join? Anyone who loves or is curious abut gourds and
has a bit of earth to share. Families, backyard gardeners, women's/men's
groups, scouts, garden clubs, etc. It's not unreasonable to think
this could become a global project. If you want to be part of the
gourd-head community, contact Joan Riise and Lenny the Gourd Guy
at 3635 N. Mozart, Chicago, IL 60618. $5 and a SASE will bring you
free seeds (if you request them), directions for successful growing,
and a mid-summer newsletter to share news and exchange ideas. A
website will be available for ongoing information. In October, a
fourth Goddess Gourd Festival at Prairie Crossing will bring gardeners
together with gourd artists and the public to celebrate the harvest.
