When the book Sexual Radiance arrived in the office, my first thought was, with a name like that, it had better live up to its promise. Happily enough, it does indeed. Sexual radiance, defined as a combination of physical vitality and the free flow of sexual energy, can be achieved by adhering to the advice of Susan Taylor (who has a Ph.D. in nutritional biochemistry) as she combines the latest findings of Western research and time-honored practices of yoga and Eastern mysticism. Sexual Radiance promotes a 21-day program of breathwork, nutrition and exercise for vigor and sensuality. To guide you on this path, Dr. Taylor leads you, in easy-reading, conversational fashion, through holistic practices that lead to a balanced biochemistry of metabolism, and the mind-body response. The sections on the art of Tantric sex, and orgasm, are expressed sensitively and well. The author also leads the reader through useable information on diet, breathing and exercises that energize, and concludes with seven very interesting appendices on the preparation of foods that invigorate that special "it"-ness.
Thanks to Susan Taylor's combination of a universally appealing subject, style that keeps you reading and well-researched information, Sexual Radiance has wide appeal. Oprah, are you listening? (236 pages, $23.00, Harmony Books.)

The newest offering from Kent Nerburn, whose poetic books have warranted attention before in this column, now offers us Letters to My Son: A Father's Wisdom on Manhood, Life, and Love. Despite the title, the sensitive and sensible messages of the thirty-one letters can inspire and motivate us all. Wonderfully wrought anecdotes and the insights to which they led the writer are high advice on life's toughest questions. His conclusions will make you think. To quote Publishers Weekly, "Nerburn bequeaths his son a legacy of wisdom about marriage, fatherhood, infidelity, wanderlust, war, work, aging and death." In letters such as Women and Men, Falling in Love, The Mystery of Sex and Making Love, The Haunted Heart, Partners and Marriage, and Staying Faithful, Kent works a subject from start to finish. Man and Male, Strength, Drugs and Alcohol, Tragedy, and The Spiritual Journey are there as well. In short, the letters are as complete a rundown as I've seen of what we all encounter and deal with in one way or another. Nerburn (who has Ph.D.s in Religion and Art) helped the Ojibwe of northwestern Minnesota to collect memories of their tribal elders, and is also the author of Neither Wolf nor Dog: On Forgotten Roads with an Indian Elder and several other titles. Consider your "son" to be yourself or anyone you know as you read the wise and poetically-framed words of this thoroughly enjoyable book. (190 pages, $12.95, New World Library.)
