A SHOWCASE OF DIVERSITY Diversity! Between noon and 6pm on June 12, on the fourth floor of 30 East Adams in Chicago, be entertained in royal fashion. Enjoy a fashion show of beautiful Indian apparel, a reading by African American poet Beverly Reed, music by an international drumming group and an art show by diverse contemporary women artists represented by the Communities of Women Art Gallery. Browse the C.O.W.A.G. Art Boutique and see clever hats, cards, jewelry, wearable art, prints, painted buttons and whole lot more . . . all at affordable prices. Then rest a bit with iced tea, coffee, homemade Chinese food by Long Wong, delicious muffins and bagels and tasty drinks from different parts of the world. Beverage recipes will be available. Menu items are available at a minimal contribution. Here you'll also find tarot readings, aromatherapy demonstrations, mini-massages and a variety of booths with neat stuff for you to look at and buy! The Summer Fling is open to the public. The proceeds benefit the Urban Art Retreat, a non-profit community organization that operates six projects in Chicago that offer services and programs for and about under-represented people. Many of its programs provide a chance for diverse cultures to met, mix and learn about each other. Summer Fling also benefits the Women's Place Resource Center, a non-profit centers offering comfortable space for women to learn of community resources, access a library and computers, take interesting and helpful workshops and find support to start their own small businesses. The 14th annual Hunger Walk takes place June 19 along Chicago's lakefront, beginning and finishing at Randolph Street and Lake Shore Drive. The 5K walk benefits the 550 member agencies of the Greater Chicago Food Depository. Pre-registration for adults is $15, $6 for entrants 6-17 and $40 for families of three or more. On-site registration fees the day of the event increase to $20 for adults, $9 for younger entrants and $45 for families. The suggested minimum pledge for each individual or family is $25. Registration opens at 8:30am and step-off is at 9:30. A picnic lunch and T-shirt are provided for all walkers. The Guild Complex, a literary arts organization, presents live events and workshops at least twice each week of the year along with sponsoring community events. For one week only, June 21 thrugh June 25, 150 movie-loving children ages 7-13, will take part in workshops developed by industry professionals. Facets' Media Arts Camp is the most unique film camp for kids in America -- a 5-day intensive where future filmmakers, screenwriters and budding critics develop skills in film critique while receiving hands-on video production training. Media Arts Camp participants first view awared-winning internatinal films made for children and clips from classics such as Hitchcock's North by Northwest. Screenings are followed by discussions of film technique, film vocabulary and key concepts such as point view. Children also learn film-rating methods and practice writing reviews before going on to learn specific production skills. The most exciting aspect of Facets' Media Arts Camp is when the children get a chance to show off their cretive talents in filmmaking, as they collaborate to produce an origianlshort video of their own. Set aside time for a fun evening or matinee performance of The Queen Be, a comedy in which a clairvoyant young girl growing up in an unsympathetic household is redeemed by love, humor and a little help from her higher self. The playwright, producer, director and star of The Queen Be is Clara Abellard, a gifted practicing clairvoyant and feng shui practitioner who has incorporated these elements into a delightful new age comedy. The play opens Friday, June 4 and runs through Sunday, July 18. Times are Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm and Sunday matinees at 3pm. Tickets are $14, with group rates available. Sri Bhagavati Vijayeswari Devi, lovingly called Karunamayi (compassionate mother) is a divine teacher who embodies creativity, truth and unconditional love.
