The Deli Lama and Sonics 2000.

by Steven Halpern

What are the odds of going to high school with someone who is now one of the leading Tibetan Buddhist teachers and authors? What are the odds of then going to the same University - and perhaps marching on some of the same anti-war protest demonstrations?
Pretty astronomical, one might assume. And so did I, until I met Lama Surya Das (the "Deli Lama") yesterday. We were both walking through the parking lot on our way to be featured presenters at a conference exploring a variety of spiritual pathways, when our paths literally crossed.
I had recently read about him in Yoga Journal and had felt a slight sense of deja vu. The article recounted his life story, and how he is now an advisor to the Dalai Lama. It also mentioned that he grew up on Long Island, New York, born into a Jewish family. I didn't recall any other specifics [except that that is the reason for the name "Deli."]
So when our paths (literally) crossed, I introduced myself - at which point he interrupted me and said, " It's been a long time since the last time we met."
I'm thinking, "Hmmmm, which past life in Tibet may he be referring to?" My internal dialog was cut short when he said, "I haven't seen you since we both went to Valley Stream Central High School. I was a year or two younger than you."
I wondered if there was a special significance to this meeting the week before my first return to Long Island in ten years. Or whether it had anything to do with my being called to produce the extraordinary recording of an ancient Tibetan sound-healing instrument (Singing Bowls of Shangri-La).

1st International Conference on Science and Consciousness

The first annual Conference on Science and Consciousness was a huge success. An extraordinary collection of leading edge scientists (Dr. William Tiller, Dr. Beverly Rubik, Paul Pearsall), astronauts (Dr. Edgar Mitchell, Dr. Brian 0'Leary) and philosophers/comparative religion (Huston Smith). Huston made the historic first recordings of Tibetan monks chanting their unique 3-tones at a time overtone singing over three decades ago.
It felt at times like listening in on a discussion among Einstein, Heisenberg and Yogananda. I could feel my brain cells growing and expanding. Dr. Tiller presented his research that documents the formerly "unprovable" power of intention as well as the healing power of love.

Special Event

It is my pleasure to announce Sonics 2000, A Celebration of Sacred Sound, an event I will be co-facilitating. Sonics 2000 (also known as S2K) will be held August 18-22, 1999 at Sunrise Ranch in Loveland, Colorado.
Joining us will be a number of teachers who will share their knowledge, experience and sounds in a co-created conscious atmosphere of love. These include Jonathan Goldman (the organizer), James Twyman, Shefa Gold and Sarah Benson. All are master teachers and musicians who are in alignment with the energies of this extraordinary event.
WHAT: Sonics 2000 (S2K) welcomes the new millennium with music, chanting, drumming and sonic group activities. It is five days of toning, teaching and transformation. The purpose of S2K is to help initiate the energies of the year 2000 as a positive, transformative experience allowing balance and frequency-shifting in these extraordinary times of change. S2K, hosted by sound healing pioneer Jonathan Goldman, is a vehicle to celebrate the coming millennium through sacred sound. Co-facilitating this event with Jonathan are world teachers, singers and musicians who are aligned with the harmony of this gathering.
Each day will highlight group experiences with exercises and teachings which will feature one of the co-facilitators of S2K. Jonathan will conduct the morning events. The afternoons will be lead by Steven, Shefa, Jimmy or Sarah. The evenings will consist of sacred vocal soundings, drumming and dancing in which everyone may participate.
