We've all seen army movies where the joke is when the officer asks for volunteers to step forward and everyone but the hapless hero takes a step backwards. Conventional wisdom says to never volunteer -- and surely there are situations where volunteering is not a very smart thing to do. But it is a mistake to let that mindset rule out the possibility of ever doing anything for anyone other than oneself.
A civil society depends on volunteerism. One must voluntarily follow rules of etiquette which are, after all, what greases the wheels of interaction. Unless you live in a rigidly controlled police state with a gun constantly to your head, a great many of the laws of the land must be voluntarily obeyed. Have you ever sat at a red light in the middle of the night with not another car in motion for miles around and waited for the green? Volunteerism is at the core of sustainable and livable life. But volunteerism goes much further than that. The old saw that it is better to give than to receive is very much to the point. It is a very valuable lesson that when you are in the act of giving you are a conduit for the All and the flow also spills into your own life. I am reminded of a story about a successful woman who, whenever she finds blockages to her prosperity, immediately goes out seeking opportunities to give. In short order, the flow into her own life resumes. In our time there are so many ways to volunteer, so many ways to give of yourself. In addition to all of the organizations that vie for your time and your money, many of which are worthy, are all of the calls for global prayer and meditation. This is perhaps the most important giving that you can do. As you go about your life in the coming years, try to take advantage of the opportunities to volunteer your light of consciousness to the emerging mass consciousness of positive change. Your own personal world and the world at large will be the better for it.
