As we jounce and glide our way into the new age, joyful teachers offer us a great gift: an astounding menu of antidotes to the beliefs that stymie our progress. These mentors beckon to paths leading from resentment and grief; they point out how we can make peace with the past, forgiving others and ourselves. They remind us to seek in Silence the art of living more easily with change; and they guide us to determine the powerful beingness that lies in the heart, theirs and yours and mine.

The teachers, too, have been hungry seekers, and with compassion they set a feast before us. In spite of the presence of those who belittle the built-in miracle of a transformed consciousness, we eagerly come to the table. As we contemplate what these mentors have to say, the living, loving magic behind their words comes more consistently to mind.

Our moods may flex from day to day, but the jury has already heard the evidence: At any given moment, we have a choice of how to be. It's ever more clear that we can either move timidly toward the day we depart this life . . . or we can trust our intuition and risk changing what has become habitual . . . from what really hasn't worked for growth, to the unfoldment of who we really are.

In A Deep Breath of Life, that page-a-day treasure from Alan Cohen, Alan sums it up neatly. "When we follow our spirit and live from joy rather than self-protection, the whole world opens up to us, and we have the power to make our dreams come true." Andrew Harvey (A Spiritual Awakening) continues this thought by reminding us of what experience has already told us: "This takes courage; this takes a ferocious commitment to truth."

Choose your truth-tellers . . . there are a goodly number of sages out there who point to the wages of - love! and touch our hearts. They fulfill their mission as they help us realize the reason why we exist at all: We literally are part of Something far grander than our concept of It.

With heads up, we can repeat the words that Thoth, known also as Hermes Trismegistus, messenger of the gods, so long ago taught his disciples to sing over and over -- until the meaning became part of them:
"The Light is in me,
I am the Light."

Intuitive Healing

When a recent airing of Michael Toms' radio interview show, New Dimensions, was cut short in our area due to a taping glitch, I ran for my car and sped to our editorial offices. There on my desk, I knew, was a new book by the intuitive psychiatrist whose riveting interview had unfortunately ended mid-sentence. Remember the name Judith Orloff when you go book hunting. In the best ways, INTUITIVE HEALING: Five Steps to Physical, Emotional and Sexual Healing lives up to its name.

By way of background, "Orloff explains the benefits of combining traditional medicine with the use of intuition as a diagnostic and healing tool. In an exceptional show of mainstream interest and support, she has been invited by the conservative American Psychiatric Association to present a talk at their May 2000 convention on 'How Intuition Can Be Used to Enhance Patient Care.' At UCLA, Orloff instructs a psychiatry resident whose specific focus is the incorporation of intuition into psychiatry; many doctors, patients and administrators at UCLA are willing to discuss Dr. Orloff's work with the media." (Yes, it's happening.)

Dr. Orloff's book is divided into three sections, The Body, Emotions and Relationships, and Sexual Wellness. The sections are divided into five parts, each guiding you to notice your beliefs, be in your body, sense your body's subtle energy, ask for inner guidance and listen to your dreams. Several questions to reflect upon are not run-of-the-mill, following as they do the sagacity of Orloff's comments and stunning illustrations. I think you'll find the questions to be true probes of the reaches of what you've chosen as your reality. In short, they can be eye-openers. Questions are followed by steps to contemplate, pointing the way to simplifying perspective. Each section is most worthy. The last, Sexual Wellness, deals with sexuality in a surprisingly intimate way, disclosing information that we haven't seen before.

[Dr. Judith Orloff's Guide to] INTUITIVE HEALING held our rapt attention, no mean feat after all the self-help reading that's come our way over the years. (348 pages, Times Books -- a division of Random House, $24.00.) [See our interview with Dr. Orloff in this issue.]

Return of the Children of Light

Judith Bluestone Polich claims not to be a scholar, but her powerful book about the Incas and Mayas and their prophecies -- that appear to be unfolding before us today -- contains substantial documentation. Her elegant presentation of the RETURN OF THE CHILDREN OF LIGHT helps us to understand the puzzle of the "Great Mystery" of time and space and consciousness from the viewpoint not just of shamanistic societies but, as she refers to it, from the god-seed hidden within us. This book "draws on research emerging in such diverse fields as quantum physics, archeoastronomy, holography, cosmology, …studies of human consciousness and mythology as well as the author's own extensive personal experiences…." Thanks to attorney Polich's astute delving, we are introduced to various legacies, Pleiadian, Lemurian, Atlantean and others that may well have planted their societal/spiritual beliefs in populations that arose in Mesoamerica and elsewhere. For students of the spirit, there is much to be considered: the power of the energy fields of sacred sites and altered states, doorways of harmonic frequency, understanding of sacred correspondence, and the elevation of collective consciousness.

RETURN OF THE CHILDREN OF LIGHT: Incan and Mayan Prophecies for a New World may help you break free of what you suspect are societal illusions that you've bought into. As Polich says in her reference to experiences she had while studying with don Miguel Ruiz, a nagual (shaman) who traced his lineage to ancient Toltecs, "I continued to fight [revelation] with all the resistance my rational mind could muster until truth eventually proved more powerful than reason."

In this fine illustration of our heritage as beings of light, Polich - who describes herself as a pragmatic visionary -- does at least two things: she clarifies the power of integrating experiences of awareness; and, thanks to her strong bent for research, further enables our transformation into acceptance of our birthright. Creator

With CREATOR: The Revelation of Healing Yourself and Others, Mark Earlix gifts us with a book eagerly anticipated by those who have been healed by him and who have attended his workshops. Here is a primer that admirably encompasses what he thinks, feels and does during healing sessions. And, Mark doesn't skip through the underpinnings of his beliefs and philosophy. In short, CREATOR offers both the science and the art of healing.

Mark's explanations of how we are entwined with the forces of energy and synchronicity are easy to grasp, along with his description of what the self is, and the choices we make between mass consciousness and individuality. These are followed by the story of Mark's discoveries -- first that he has the ability to heal others, and then of how he came to terms with it. The latter is must reading for anyone who practices any of the healing arts, not just those who are spiritual healers. He takes us on a journey of developing conscious awareness of the power of our every thought, word and action, and points out the purpose and relevance to our state of healing consciousness of every thing, every situation.

The chapters "Understanding Healing" and "Healing: Getting Started" are graphic explanations in Q and A form of these significant components of healing oneself and others. Morphic fields, auras, the dis-ease body come in for scrutiny; learning to trust one's own intuition is treated on as well. Time lines, scanning and prayer are all important topics that will be worth your while to consider. For your easy reference, Meditations and Exercises are repeated in a couple of Addendums. (249 pages, $21.95, The Art of Healing, Inc., 1928 E. Highland, Site 104 - Box 144, Phoenix, AZ 85016, www.theartofhealing.com.)

The three books reviewed thismonth prove that it doesn't necessarily take a ride on the wild side to convince you that "there is more under heaven than is dreamt of in our philosophies." If you want to be part of that wider world, here's the opportunity to open some personal areas through the printed word. It's likely that any of these three books will spawn discussion groups.
