I was recently at the meeting of the International Society of the Study of Subtle Energies and Energy Medicine (ISSSEEM), and I confess that I am thrilled by the information that is making its way into mainstream thinking! The theme story is that we are truly beings of magnetic energy, and the discoveries which are now being validated by hard science and hard-minded scientists are breathtaking.

Some the things that emerged from the meeting are:

1. We are beings of magnetic energy.

2. These magnetic energies can be measured now by an instrument called the SQID (Superconducting Quantum Interference Device) which is far superior to electrical instruments such as the electro-cardiogram, the electro-encephalogram, and the electro-myogram.

3. By virtue of the magnetic emanation that we deliver -- and which delivers us, or makes us -- there is a validation of the inter-communication among all of us.

One evidence of this is that the communication system arises through connective tissue. This tissue connects everything in the body from the coverings of the nervous system (the meninges) down to the fascial and connective covering of every cell in the body. If the connective tissue is a system of communication -- and it is -- it follows that we are in communication within ourselves from one cell to the other to the other, from each cell in the body from those in the brain to those in the toes, and back and forth. Every cell in the body knows everything about everything else in the body. But this goes further, because each cell emanates electrical and magnetic energy which surrounds us and which meets with the magnetic energies of others.

The emerging energy therapies such as Reiki, Polarity, Hypnotism, Feng Shui, Qi Gong, and on and on, indicate that there is an interfusing, intercommunicative system throughout our world, throughout our planetary system, throughout our cosmos. Not only that, but this system communicates with us and within us.

One of the most interesting findings of the new science is that this connective tissue communication is carried on through electro-magnetism, connecting every cell with every other. As the cell itself is investigated, it is found that there is something within it that is akin to connective tissue. What we thought was empty space in the cell is really full of fibrils called integrins. These integrins connect the periphery of each cell to its interior. Not only that, they connect the interior of the cell with the nucleus. Further: within the nucleus there are still other integrins. As we investigate the integrins themselves, we find a repetition of the same pattern, ad infinitum. This is interesting and exciting insofar as it indicates that there is this infinitude ... not only of communication but of inner creation which matches outer creation, and is in itself consistent with, and an exact repetition of, the teachings of the Ancient Mysteries, the teachings of the core of all religions.

This work is marvelously summarized by James Ochsman, Ph.D., a highly credentialed academic scientist connected with The National Institutes of Health. His book, Energy Medicine: The Scientific Basis, tells it all. I had the privilege of attending an all-day workshop with Dr. Ochsman, and was alive with enthusiasm over the new knowledge which was given to us.

Ochsman has a lively and ever-inquiring mind. When he noticed that a fly was about to enter his eye but only hit the eyelid as he blinked, he pondered, "Why? How did it happen so fast? This was so much faster than anything that the neurological system can transfer and transport." The blink occurred in a quantum moment. So did another eye-sparing blink that occurred in a patient who had opened a flash furnace and in a moment suffered a severe burn of his face, losing his eyebrows and a good portion of his hair. But his eyes were spared. They were not burned! How? Why? It was too fast for anything known in our classical medical science. The postulate is that there is another, a separate, perhaps parallel communication system that is as fast as the speed of light, if not faster! Perhaps this system is in the acupuncture meridia that (Ochsman says) reside in the connective tissue of the body -- which in itself is light bearing and light emitting. Perhaps it is a transfer and communication through the magnetic fields that surround us and which we can now identify and measure with our instruments. As Dr. Ochsman spoke, I could see a vision that was appearing in his mind and teaching about the communication system.

Is there any wonder why we may be so filled with marvel as we become aware of that energy self that we are; the energy self that is integrated with the body and yet is beyond the body!

Now to turn to Mesmer, for whom this column is titled. Anton Mesmer lived and did his work somewhere around 1775. He called this work Animal Magnetism, and it was the beginning demonstration of what is now known as hypnosis. He was able to produce some remarkable results. But when he called it Vital Energy, a term anathema to the scientific world of the time, he was excluded and ridiculed. As a consequence, Mesmerism became very unpopular until the late 1890s, at which time Charcot, Freud and others began to put it use again. It has remained in disrepute until recent years when it became the subject of scientific study and investigation. The important relationship with Anton Mesmer is that he called this energy "Animal Magnetism." Apparently, he sensed that it was a form of magnetic energy.

The work produced and validated in Ochsman¹s book and his research studies and those of other hard-line scientists such as William Tiller, demonstrates that we are made up of magnetic energy; that we emanate magnetic energy, that the technique of Reiki in which one transmits energy through the hands is, in fact a valid sending forth of healing and magnetic energies to the body surround, which will absorb (smorgasbord style) that which it needs.

An ancient painting of Christ, Jesus, shows that He carries his left hand over his heart while His right hand sends forth healing energy. Ochsman has pointed out that the heart is the organ that contains the largest field of magnetic energy. It has a brain of its own which in many ways is superior to the cerebral cortex, and carries the functions similar to those of the right brain. The circuit of the heart to the right hand is a circuit of outpouring of healing energy, which is broadly demonstrated by the increasing popularity of Reiki, which now appears in some of the major medical institutions of the country. And so, after decades of being off limits in academic science and medical practice, there is now a major resurgence of interest in "energy medicine."

Biomagnetism is a new field of investigation of magnetic fields produced by all living things, with a focus on the effects of magnetic fields on living systems, and the effects of healing through the emanation of energy through the hands of the healers. It is a field of "magneto-biology" and "magneto-therapy" and thus shows that what was begun by Anton Mesmer continues. Anton Mesmer is alive and well in the twenty-first century.
