Yes, but....
by Guy Spiro All absolute statements are false, including this one. There seems to be no escape from paradox in life. One man's meat is another man's poison seems illogical on the surface. Poison for one, it would seem, is poison for all and yet experience teaches that what kills one person makes another stronger. How is it that reality seems to not be grounded in reality? The problem is that there is no reality in a non-relative sense. Modern science is predicated on duplication of effects and predictability. If a thing is true then it is always true. But anomalies continue to pile up. These anomalies are most often set to the side or discarded altogether, but occasionally one of them will stand conventional wisdom on its head and a new consensus reality will be born. The point I am laboring to make here is that what we think of as our reality, isn't. One of the earliest realizations one needs to have when walking the path is the inherent incompleteness of knowledge. Indeed, the pathworker needs to be willing to give up cherished and lifelong beliefs when a higher level of reality is attained. Yes, one should have the courage of one's convictions, but also the humility to recognize that one's vision is limited to the level of one's ascent. Remember that if you are looking north you are not looking south, that every yes is a no and that everything I've just said is absolutely true.... |
