ELEMENTS FOR TRANSFORMATION
by Jim Loftus

New and interesting products for enhancement of the body, mind, and spirit

Welcome to Elements. Endings and beginnings are the province of Janus, the two-faced god who looks both backward and forward simultaneously. He is the keeper of gates, and not only physical gates but also the transition from past to future. Although considered a minor Roman deity, you will note that he was important enough to have a month of the calendar named for him.

Endings are often ignored until they force themselves upon us. Our imaginings are seldom sufficient to prepare us for the sometimes sudden changes that endings bring. Then decisions must be made, actions taken or withheld, and new beginnings fashioned from the old familiar ways in combination with our new circumstances.

Chaos and disaster? Only if we refuse to accept what is, and cling to the past which is no more. Some experience is helpful in dealing with endings, change, and the beginnings of new situations. Though each is different, like endings and beginnings themselves, each is essentially also the same. We survived these changes before by adapting and growing, applying those principles that have proven themselves. The new times that are coming will be different from the old, yet they will also be the same. This time we can try to do even better than before.

MIRACLES

"Miracles, A Journey of Hope and Healing" from Paul Cardall is a delightful change from the sometimes exhausting sets of tracks too often found on many of the CDs we receive. His compositions are simply elegant, without pretense, and executed with an orchestral solidity that lets the listener absorb the emotions he portrays without being conscious of the mechanics of the process.

From the first notes of the title song, based on themes from Paul's 1999 Billboard chart hit "The Christmas Box," you quickly find yourself making your own journey back and inward, then out of the too familiar and toward new perspectives. The next to last track, "The Memory Lives On," features Kimberly Summers" sensitive vocals and was selected by the families of those lost in the Oklahoma City Federal Building bombing to be played during the dedication services for the memorial there.

Although loss and leaving are the apparent genesis of the need for the hope and healing of which Paul's music speaks, there is yet a sense of a return to what was once known but has been forgotten along the way; a realizing of salvation in buried memories. An apt quote in the liner notes from Albert Einstein points the direction: "There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle."

LLEWELLYN'S ASTROLOGICAL CALENDAR 2003

Not just a calendar, here is an excellent source for learning the Art and Science of Astrology, with extensive references to practically all of the various aspects of this practice in plain language. Published since 1932, Llewellyn's Astrological Calendar offers a wealth of astrological data so you can easily follow Sun and Moon signs, planetary motions and aspects, and find explanations of the terms and symbols used on each calendar page.

Sun sign forecasts point out your most rewarding and challenging days each month for career, finance, and romance, while the Lunar Guide highlights the best times for activities such as buying a home or starting a diet. Retrogrades and Moon void of course are indicated, and world predictions, travel and business forecasts, and best times for fishing and planting are also included. For the novice, there is an introduction to astrology which includes definitions and meanings for the planets, signs, houses, and perhaps most interesting, definitions of the major aspects of each of the planets with one another.

Nicely done full-color illustrations of the signs highlight each of the months, but the real value of this large format (13' x 20' opened size), 52-page calendar is its wealth of information, from the technical to the basics. It will likely spend as much time on your table as a reference as it will on your wall.

LLEWELLYN'S WITCHES' CALENDAR 2003

Whether you're planning a ritual, sabbat feast, or a birthday party, Llewellyn's Witches' Calendar 2003 has all the information you need to make every day magical: Wiccan holidays; color correspondences; the best days to plant and harvest; the Moon's sign and phase; planetary motion, including retrogrades; and solar and lunar eclipses. Also included each month are important dates in Wiccan history, celebrated Wiccan's birthdays, and interesting historical references and more current history of note.

This year's calendar is packed with practical tips, invocations, folklore, herb lore, and original full-color scratchboard art by Kathleen Edwards. Articles appropriate to each month plus several additional essays written by popular Pagan authors give you the ideas and tools you need to weave a Witches' web of magic all year long.

Like Llewellyn's Astrological calendar, this version is also large format 13' x 20' opened size, 48 pages in total. Interesting short biographies of the twenty-one contributing authors, a table of references, and summary of the symbols and notations on the months pages are included.

IMAGINE 2003 CALENDAR

By far the most artistic of the calendars presented here, and if primal symbols intrigue you, an obvious choice for tracking next year's dates. Artist Jody Bergsma has provided twelve wonderfully evocative watercolors for her 2003 calendar that take you to forest and tundra, into the sky and under the sea. Through stylized but realistic renditions, her art captures the magical aspects of dolphins, otters, eagles and wolves, sea turtles, polar bears, manatees and orcas, many interwoven with Inuit totemic symbols from the Northwest region near Bellingham, Washington, where Jody has her gallery.

Although there is no text to speak of, this calendar does include a brief explanation of each of the holidays observed in the English-speaking world, something not seen in other calendars. Have you sometimes wondered what Boxing Day or Anzac Day were? Likely many Britons and Aussies have also wondered about Groundhog Day and Thanksgiving. Here are the explanations.

THE '03 LUNAR CALENDAR

"Dedicated to the Goddess in Her many guises" is the subtitle of this unique 13-month lunar calendar. The first lunation (lunar month) begins with the new moon and total eclipse of the sun on December 4, 2002, and continues through January 1, 2003, a total of 29 nights. Each of the subsequent lunar months is depicted in a spiral format, consisting of 29 or 30 nights, beginning always with the new moon.

Although it may appear somewhat awkward at first to think in terms of non-standard months, The Lunar Calendar actually adapts well to understanding the cyclical nature of things, and appreciating the inherent relationships between humanity and nature. Its pages also teach the tree-alphabet as inspired by The White Goddess by Robert Graves, and give examples of the other symbols, colors, and qualities associated with each lunation. The calendar shows all the moon's phases, rise and set times, apogee and perigee, the transits of the zodiac, void-of-course times, earth festivals, and visibility of the morning and evening stars.

All in all, this easily read, informative, and scholarly calendar is an excellent choice for both the beginner and the seasoned moon-lover. The '03 edition features fresh work from 23 artists, poets, and writers, full astronomical and astrological data, the lunar year-at-a-glance, complete instructions, and an extensive bibliography. Calendar open size is 11' x 17', 36 total pages.
