A skilled astrologer in both her native Japanese and Western systems, Yasuko Makishi (pronounced YAS-ko) focuses upon the practical applications of horary and electional chart readings for the stock and futures markets. Her previous predictions, viewed after the fact, read like a history of what these markets’ actual performances.

The Monthly Aspectarian: How did you get started using astrology for playing the market?

Yasuko Makishi: My mother used to do readings.

TMA: Astrology readings?

YM: Yes, Japanese astrology. I was never interested in astrology, but when I came to this country and studied economics, I knew something was missing in the market theories being taught. One day I decided that maybe I should use western astrology and that’s how I got started.

TMA: I’ve never been involved in it, but I know that there are many people using astrology for financial prediction.

YM: One thing led to another and I started doing a lot of readings. One day I was approached by a Gann trader. A lot of the futures traders follow this legendary trader named W.D. Gann. He is a legend because of his accuracy and what he made in the stock and futures markets and he has a large following. This particular trader wanted to know if I could figure out what Gann did. He believed that whatever Gann used was something unconventional, like astrology.

TMA: Because it appeared to be cyclical?

YM: I don’t know where he was coming from, but that could be the reason. He just wanted to know if there was anything I could do to figure out how Gann arrived at the figures that he did. At first, I wasn’t sure I could do it, but I attempted it, and about five years later it all came together. I did a test. My husband had lost his job and started a new one. I was reading his chart and I said to him, “I want you to drop everything and I want you to give this guy a call and ask him for a job.” I told him to get as many stock options as he could, and that’s what he did. This was around 1995 and he wasn’t sure because we were just at the beginning of the bull market. He couldn’t understand why I was pushing the stocks because it was only about $3 or $4 a share.

TMA: What was the company?

YM: Kansas City Southern Holding Company, which owned the Janus Fund. He couldn’t understand why I was making such a fuss over such a small stock. I said, just listen to me. You have to trust me on this one. He said OK. He got the job and he got all the stock options, and we moved to Shreveport, Louisiana, where the company is located. The stock split twice and after that I got a tax free spin off of the Janus Fund. I had speculated on real estate before that, using the charts, just buying and selling, but that was the first time with the stock market. At the time, I just couldn’t understand what the futures market was about. So I used an electional chart and placed a trade. When I got the statement, I figured out how the game was played, and that was the start of my trading futures.

TMA: What happened next?

YM: I went into trading stocks, and last Fall I started trading penny stocks. The way the market is right now, it’s best to put your money on something small that will give you a certain amount of return. These penny stocks are very risky because there are not a lot of people trading them. However, I used astrology and bought some of what are called thinly traded stocks. They moved, and I got about a 550% return in one quarter.

TMA: Can’t argue with that.

YM: This is all done with astrology. I use astrology as a tool.

TMA: I saw on your website that you describe it as a language. That is exactly what I say to my own students. You have your symbols which is the alphabet, your systems of rulerships and such which is grammar, and you put it together and start to think and communicate in it.

YM: You’re absolutely right.

TMA: How are you identifying individual stocks astrologically? Do you find birth times for the companies?

YM: No, not at all. I use three different charts. First I use America’s chart, the 7 degree Gemini Rising. I use that chart, and I derive another chart from that for monthly activity. I do the entire month of trades, which sectors are going to move. My style of trading is more what you would call a swing trade, a day to two or three days. I do that with several stocks. That gives me so much a day, so much a week. I don’t have the time to sit there and figure out when this company was incorporated. You can’t even do that. But using the transits, I can show a trader how to trade that day.

TMA: What things indicate when you should buy and when you should sell, and what you should buy and what you should sell?

YM: What you should buy and what you should sell, now that’s a secret. [laughter] From the U.S.A. chart, I use the transits and lunations. The chart that I derive from the U.S.A. chart tells me where to focus so I know which sector, and, of course, the politics move the market sometimes. So I key in on that. Then I combine that with the transits, and you know that in horary astrology, the Moon is the source of all activity. That’s why the Moon’s aspects are very important for someone using horary. There was a stock I was trading, it was going up and up and up and I thought, no, somewhere it’s going to stop. When it got all the way to the top, I wasn’t sure whether I should hang onto it for another move up or I should get out. I asked the horary question and I immediately got out of the stock. In fact, I bid it about 2 or 3 cents lower just to get out. Monday morning, down, down, down. I use the horary chart in times like that.

TMA: How hard is it for a trader who has no interest or background in astrology to pick it up and use it?

YM: Well, they have to learn to read astrology. Like the way they would learn to read technical charts. Technical charts tell you the high and low of the price. I would say a good 80-90% of the traders that are out there trading right now—professional traders—use some kind of system. The technical charts, they will all tell you, sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t. I use astrology, and I can tell you that astrology has never been wrong. I can make a mistake interpreting it, but astrology will never, never be wrong. If there was something wrong, I can go back and find where I made the mistake, but it was me, not the chart.

TMA: Astrology basically works by analogy. You have figured out the analogies for the markets and it works for you.

YM: Absolutely, no doubt in my mind.

TMA: It seems to me that if these people were willing to put the time into learning the rules of the markets and the systems they practice, then they probably have the discipline and the ability to learn to use astrology as well.

YM: Yes, I think so. I have students who are progressing along quite well. They have first to master the language, then we read the markets.
