Dear Louise,

I was raised in an alcoholic family. Both my parents continue to drink, and I doubt they’ll ever stop. This still upsets me, but I don’t want it to. I realize that I can’t control anyone but myself, so I’ve set boundaries regarding my home environment—there’s no drinking in my home. However, when I go to visit them or when we’re out at a restaurant, I know I have no right to tell them what they can and cannot do. How can I make peace with my situation and accept them as they are?

—L.A., Washington, D.C.

Dear L.A.,

We want so much for our parents to accept us just as we are. That also means that we need to accept them as they are. We have no control over others. However, we do have control over how we choose to feel. We can make ourselves miserable over events, or we can choose to feel good no matter what others say, think, or do. We do have the choice to remove ourselves from their presence if we choose to.

So the answer is for you to change your thinking about the subject. There’s nothing more important in your life than for you to feel good. And your choice of thoughts on this subject are making you miserable. Why are you choosing to suffer because they’re not taking care of themselves in the manner that you think they should? Shoulds always get us into trouble. If their behavior really upsets you, then don’t see them. Affirm: I am at peace in the midst of chaos or madness. No person, place, or thing has the power to upset me.

Dear Louise,

About three years ago I suffered a nervous breakdown. Since then I haven’t been the same. I was once strong and completely content and at peace with myself and my life. I feel that I’ve done nothing more than want to contribute to this world in a positive way, and now that I need the help and love I’ve given to this world, I’m receiving nothing in my time of need. I just want my life back. What can I do to feel like I once did?

—A.S., Boston, MA

Dear A.S.,

For someone who was strong and completely content and at peace with yourself and with life, how did you have a nervous breakdown? The two views of life don’t compute.

Stop thinking about other people. They can’t give you what you need. Only you can heal yourself. The best way for you to create a good life for yourself is to dwell on gratitude and appreciation. Begin to appreciate your body, your mind, the air you breathe, the foods you eat, the clothes you wear, the bed you sleep in, the dwelling you have, the sunshine, the wind, the rain, the snow, the flowers, the land, the and the thoughts you choose to think.

Begin to think thoughts that make you feel good. Be grateful. Affirm: I love Life and Life loves me. I see good things around me, and I see good things in my future. I am grateful for my own laughter. I truly know and affirm that all is well in my world.

Dear Louise,

I am new to your work. Do you feel that the thought patterns that we have from moment to moment manifest physically all the time, and can these be reversed effectively after many years?

—P.A., Dallas, TX

Dear P.A.,

Everything can be reversed. No matter how long you’ve had a condition, you can release it and let it go. You’re as close to changing your life as your current thought. It will help you a lot if you “believe” it can be reversed, Your beliefs contributed to any condition you now have, and changing your beliefs will allow the healing power to manifest.

Here are some good affirmations for you to practice to create perfect health in your body. You can say or think one affirmation all day long, such as “All is well,” over and over and over. Or you can have twenty and just say or write one once a day. The number of times you say an affirmation really is up to each individual person.

Affirm: I love my body inside and out. I am constantly discovering new ways to improve my health. Healing happens! I get my mind out of the way and allow the intelligence of my body to do its healing work naturally. My body is always doing its best to create perfect health. I am grateful to be alive. It’s my joy and pleasure to live another wonderful day. I always choose the health professional who’s just right for my current needs. Perfect health is my Divine right, and I claim it now.
