Can Optimal Health Be This Simple?

By James Loftus

Consuption of oxygenated water is expected to triple

Recently I met with Art Leidecker of the Leidecker Institute, but instead of discussing hypnosis as you might expect, Art wanted to talk about oxygen ... specifically, oxygenated water. Of course, I knew something about the importance of water, H2O, having installed chlorine filters on my home water system some time ago. But I was fascinated to learn that there is increasing opinion that extra oxygen infused in our water can actually improve many biological functions, and even positively affect the course of many diseases.

Art’s involvement with water began when his wife was diagnosed with cancer. In dealing with his wife’s treatment, Art was determined to do whatever he could to help her beat the odds. In addition to supporting her oncological treatments, he began to research everything available on her specific condition. One of the things he learned was the fact that cancers are anaerobic, that is, they grow in an oxygen poor environment. Neither cancer cells nor many harmful bacteria and viruses can survive in oxygen. He reasoned that if he could get as much oxygen as possible into her blood, it could create an environment hostile to the cancer cells.

A used hospital-style oxygen concentrator was available on the internet, so Art purchased it, and with a some modifications, was able to use it to oxygenate water. Testing his wife’s blood with a pulse oxymeter as she drank the oxygenated water confirmed that the charged water was increasing the oxygen level of her blood. So far so good. The concept worked, but there were still impracticalities for everyday use. The machine took up a huge amount of space, and was so noisy they couldn’t even hear the phone ring while it was running. In addition, it took a long time to charge the water with oxygen, and since extra oxygen remains in water for only about 48 hours, this meant running the noisy concentrator frequently.

Of course, Art also found that oxygenated water was available to order. But besides its cost of $44.00 per gallon, he found that by the time it arrived from the source, it actually had less oxygen content than his own tap water. He also found a system for sale that would let you produce your own oxygenated water—at a cost of $1600.00. Standing nearly shoulder height, this machine was no real improvement over the hospital-style unit he already had, and neither solved the problem of portability when he and his wife traveled away from home.

Finally, further research showed that hydrogen peroxide, H2O2, could be made to release one of its oxygen atoms by mixing it with a catalytic material. Art created a system that would combine the peroxide and catalase together in a closed container. Equipped with a suitable filter, pump and tubing, nearly pure oxygen was released which could then be infused into water, juice, or practically any other liquid. The system was inexpensive, lightweight, portable, easy to use, and oxygenated a gallon of water in three minutes, at a cost of about 55 cents! He called it the OxyCharger™ Water Oxygenator System.

Around the world, many other uses have been found for oxygenated water. Athletes use it to increase the oxygen supply in their blood for improved performance. The ability of anaerobic organisms such as viruses, bacteria, and fungi to thrive is compromised by exposure to oxygen, helping the immune system to overcome them. The environment for friendly bacteria, which respond positively to oxygen, is enhanced. Oxygen neutralizes acid: Muscles recover faster and perform better when excess lactic acid is neutralized, likewise the hyperacidity which is present in cases of gout, GERD, and similar conditions is neutralized with increased oxygenation. Increased oxygen even helps the body burn fat more efficiently.

Numerous studies have confirmed that one of the major differences between fresh air and stagnant air, between fresh water and stagnant water, is their oxygen content. It is this additional oxygen that gives people the energy boost they feel in a clean environment, and creates the refreshment felt when drinking from a fast flowing mountain stream. Contrast this with the physically depressant effect of polluted city air, or the stagnant air of a closed room. Compare ordinary water fresh from a running tap with the same water that has sat in a glass for several hours. The difference you feel in energy level, alertness, and well being is the difference in oxygenation.

Art makes no health claims for his OxyCharger™ Water Oxygenator System. Individual users need to evaluate and decide for themselves whether the benefits of oxygen charged water, juices, and so forth may be useful to them. For whatever their own reasons may be, apparently many consumers around the world have decided in the affirmative. Consumption of oxygenated water in North America, western Europe and Japan was about 100 million litres in 2003, up a whopping 45% from 2001.

In spite of limited general availability and bottlers of energy drinks having failed so far to embrace the concept, consumption of oxygenated water is expected to triple by 2007 as word spreads and regular consumers of oxygen charged water continue to promote its benefits.  Fortunately, owners of the OxyCharger™ system won’t have to wait for retailers to catch up to this expanding demand for oxygenated water. Art has stated that he expects similar growth rates to continue into the foreseeable future, and he has already engaged distributors for his system in Texas, Alabama, Florida, California, Colorado, and of course, Illinois.
