Spiritual Technology
by Guy Spiro I have long theorized that what has come down to us as the wisdom of the ages is the remnants of our ancestor’s technology. What we think of as metaphysics, the occult and spiritual practice is what has been preserved and practiced by the few. The mystery schools of the past two thousand years maintained teachings that had to be kept secret for the protection of both the information and those preserving it. The shaman’s spirit journey, indigenous people’s knowledge of and ability to communicate and work with nature spirits, the language of astrology, all of these and many more ways of understanding and cooperation with the universe have been passed down from time immemorial. Now they stand in the light of day no longer shrouded in secrecy. In our time we have unprecedented access to all of the world’s religions, both exoteric and esoteric. Ancient and modern philosophical systems and psychological approaches are increasingly available online and in a variety of media. Spiritual tourism is taking seekers right to the sources in rainforests, mountain valleys and other heretofore inaccessible places. What emerges from all of this is a spiritual technology that transcends any one religion or system. When you strip away the religiosity from Christianity, Buddhism or any of the religions, what you have is a system for dealing with the Is. What I find fascinating is the common threads that run through all paths that lead to illuminating consciousness. Some teachers, deserving of respect, say that one should choose a system and work with it more or less exclusively. There are advantages to that and many systems are comprehensive. It can certainly be argued that one can go deeper into a particular system if not distracted by others. But I have always believed in a more eclectic approach. While I am currently mainly involved in a metaphysical Christian study, I cannot begin to confine myself to it. There are too many ways to say the same things and some systems say some things more clearly than others. What I find to be most important is individual illumination and it seems to me that different people benefit from different combinations of practices. We live in the early stages of an age that presents information at a staggering pace that continues accelerate. Magic and science are merging to present us with unlimited choice. We are fortunate indeed that we have access to the emerging spiritual technology as science discovers deeper and deeper levels of reality. It is up to us to see that our knowledge does not run too far ahead of our wisdom. Examine the spiritual technologies available and illuminate your consciousness. Light must prevail. |
