I Still Believe in Angels

By Diana J. Sanders

I’ve never actually seen an angel. I never dream of angels and am unable to imagine one in my mind.

I’ve never actually seen an angel. I never dream of angels and am unable to imagine one in my mind. I have never felt the brush of angel wings on my skin, and, except for one extraordinarily difficult time in my life when I believe an angel yelled in my ear, I do not hear angel voices. Still, I know, without a doubt, angels exist and are here to help us.

Along the many avenues on my spiritual journey, I’ve felt frustrated and inadequate in my seeming lack of clairaudience and my inability to see anything but darkness in my mind’s eye. I’ve attended many workshops where fellow participants experienced their inner journeys, clearly hearing healing messages from the spirit realm, or seeing visions of brilliant images. I, however, sit in darkness, often enjoying a sense of peace and well-being, but hearing and seeing nothing.

I know others share my frustration in their lack of psychic sensory experiences. But while I am still hopeful these channels will someday be open to me, my limited ability to see, hear, or imagine has not dampened my belief in angels and their heavenly guidance. I believe in angels because I see, hear, and experience them in my own way every day. The angels have helped me more times than I can count, and what I have learned over the years is if one pays attention, it becomes easier to recognize angelic signs and sense angelic presence.

If you also struggle with extra-sensory communication and have concluded that either you must be doing something wrong, or that your angels must be sleeping on the job, here are some suggestions to help you receive your angels’ guidance.

Watch for Signs

Angels use creative and sometimes humorous ways to get your attention. For example, often when I’m driving or riding in a car, my angels send me a meaningful word or phrase by way of signs painted on the sides of cars or trucks. I have also seen angel shapes in the clouds. Once I became lost while driving in an unfamiliar area. After asking the angels to help me find my way, I noticed angel shapes in the clouds that seemed to be pointing me in what turned out to be the right direction.

The angels have many ways to help us hear them, as well. I frequently hear songs on the radio that have significant lyrics related to a problem I am considering. Or I might hear part of a radio or television program that addresses the exact issue with which I am dealing. For example, just the day I began thinking about writing this article, I was listening to a radio talk show. A woman with my first name, who was my age, called the show asking for career advice and was advised to write an article for a magazine. I accepted that as a sign for me to act on the idea I was considering.

Some might call these events coincidences, but the more one recognizes the recurrence of these so-called coincidences in response to a request for angelic assistance, the harder it is to deny the spiritual guidance you are receiving.

Trust Your Gut!

When you get that “icky” feeling in your stomach and a sense that something isn’t right, it probably isn’t! Your angels may be trying to give you a heads up. How often do we dismiss that sensation, only to discover in the end that our gut feeling was right? We may be receiving a warning of impending danger, or the feeling may simply be unresolved fear or anxiety related to the situation. Before you act, stop and ask your angels to help you identify the meaning of what you are feeling and help you determine the appropriate action to be taken. If you get a hit that you are in a dangerous situation, ask your angels to help you remove yourself from it. This does not have to be a long prayer or invocation. A simple “Help me, angels,” will do the trick!

Use Tools to Help You Connect

There are lots of books and CDs readily available in mainstream bookstores and metaphysical shops that offer guided exercises, methods, and ideas to help you connect with your angels. Angel cards can be helpful in providing a tool for receiving daily angelic guidance for those of us who need a little more help hearing and seeing our angels. Using the angel cards daily does not have to be a time consuming exercise. Angel expert and author Doreen Virtue, Ph.D., recommends you simply ask your angels, “What message do you have for me today?” Then draw a card and ask your angels to help provide clarity to the message you receive. Sometimes you will think the angel’s message is spot on. Other days, you will be sure the message must be for someone else. On these days, be sure to ask your angels for extra help in discerning the meaning of the message.

No one way is right for everyone and your angels may guide you to other methods. Don’t worry about which books, tapes, cards or other tools to use for angel guidance. You may find you connect to your angels more effectively by journaling, writing your angels a letter, or another technique that suits your individual style. Simply ask your angels to help you find the personal practice that works best for you and your angels. Trust your feelings and intuition, and remember, you cannot make a mistake.

Pray

With the exception of dangerous situations, the angels do not interfere in our lives. The angels intervene only if we ask for their help, either by asking God to send the angels to us, or asking the angels directly for help. Your request for divine intervention can be a long, prayerful invocation or simply a quick thought. Any way you do it, you cannot over-ask. The angels are here for us and want to be with us, to help and guide us.

Prove It to Yourself!

The angels want to help us with all aspects of our lives, big and small. But for some of us, especially those who think they are sensory challenged, believing and trusting in angelic help and intervention can take time. While I often asked the angels for help, it took several years to allow myself to surrender my analytic mind and controlling nature and believe what I was experiencing was angelic in origination. Sometimes it helps to test the waters with less important things before you trust the angels with bigger problems. Start small. Ask for help finding a parking place at the mall, or for help finding just the right recipe for an upcoming dinner party. Ask for green lights when you are running late driving to your destination. Then keep a journal or a “signs from heaven” list of any help you receive from your angels. You’ll be amazed at the results.

The next time you have a problem and ask your angels for help, pay close attention to what happens next. You may see a significant word, phrase, or number over and over again, or you may come across just the right book that addresses your issue. You may overhear a conversation in a restaurant that seems to hold a message just for you. Or out of the blue, a friend may call you with the solution to your problem. Soon you’ll be hearing and seeing your angels in your own unique way. And don’t forget to thank your angels.
