Goddammit
By Guy Spiro

Oops, I took the Lord’s name in vain again.

One of my shortcomings is having a bit of a potty mouth. If you could read my birth chart, you’d see that I come by it naturally. Like most people, I manage to keep it clean in the places where it matters, but sometimes, even at more inappropriate times, something will slip out. Even worse, however, is how often we take the Lord’s name in vain in a real sense. While swearing is a lamentable habit, saying words like the title above is not the worst thing you can say to yourself.

When Moses encountered the burning bush, he asked something like, “What God are you?” Part of the answer was I Am that I Am. The I Am consciousness is our connection to what can be seen as the Lord. It is the level of consciousness that where we tap into the God part of ourselves. Thus we really take the Lord’s name in vain when we say things like, I am tired, I am poor, I am weak or I am any other negative thing. Taking the Lord’s name in vain is when we foolishly proclaim undesirable conditions about our lives using the I Am statement.

Habits are hard to break. We really probably should try to limit the cursing and the single digit salutes in traffic. Doing that will add to the civility and niceness in our daily lives. But we should definitely work to control our minds and our tongues when it comes to the I Am. The universe will deliver what we ask. When you think or say I am, make sure that it’s something that you really want.
