Long before Marvin Gaye sang about “Sexual Healing,” lovers had discovered that music was an intimate ingredient in creating an environment conducive to romance and sensual pleasure. (Also check out B Tribe’s Sensual, Sensual and Donna de Lory’s The Lover and the Beloved.) But what many lovers are only recently learning is that the subtle sensory pleasures afforded by relaxation and healing music are not limited to holistic health or meditative uses. Over the past thirty years, I have received glowing reports from listeners who thought they were the first to discover these new dimensions to my healing music. They’re surprised when I tell them that I’ve known this since l975, when I began “field testing” my first album in a wide variety of situations, as part of my early research. (At least, that was what I occasionally told my research partners). In any case, this topic has always been of great interest in my workshops, so I’d like to share a few thoughts with you. My experience has been that both women and men can benefit from heightening their aural awareness. Four Keys to Sonic Sensuality and Spiritual Lovemaking Ask most people what music they listen to when they want to enhance their RQ (Romantic Quotient), and they’ll often cite music with a big beat or suggestive lyrics. If you’ve never orchestrated your amour with more ambient music, here are a few considerations that may encourage you to experiment for yourself. When you listen to truly relaxing music like Chakra Suite or Music for Lovers, each individual automatically shifts gears into their own “relaxation response zone.” And guess what? There seems to be a universal commonality in the specific frequency of this state, thus each partner is tuning in to the same basic harmonic of life and love (often described as Earth Resonance or the Schumann resonance, about 7.83 to 8 cycles per second). In this elevated state of coherence and inner harmony, it’s much easier to breathe in perfect synchrony with each other. This is highly correlated with feelings of rapport, oneness and opening of the heart chakra. When you’re relaxed, muscle tension is reduced. Conversely, sensitivity of the skin and other vital organs is enhanced, thus increasing the “pleasure principle.” Relaxation facilitates and supports more effective circulation of blood and energy to the extremities, as well as the genitals. Men often find it is easier to become aroused and to maintain this state of arousal for extended periods of time. Women enjoy the benefits of their man’s ability to stay connected with them, as well as their own internal responses as well. Leading experts in human sexuality and Tantra, like Charles and Caroline Muir, as well as Margot Anand, always include relaxation in their programs. But your bodies already know the score ... when you use the right music. So have fun exploring which music works best for you. By the wayif you don’t have a sound system, even a basic mini-stereo or boombox in your bedroom, remedy that deficiency immediately. Soundtracks Not Recommended for Lovers How can you know what’s the best music for you? You’ll have to experiment for yourself. Happily, this is a situation where “getting there is half the fun.” However, I can give you the name of one legendary classical composition that most of you should most definitely avoid. It is the most researched and documented composition known to evoke strong feelings of depression. Indeed, in the annals of music therapy, there are even cases of suicide attributed to this composition. (On the other hand, there are many individuals who love this song.) So imagine my surprise when I bought Classics for Lovers (Intersound Records) and found a particular song included in their beautifully packaged box set. What song do you think it is? What could possibly motivate a producer to include this song? I mean, the last thing I would want as a background for my romantic moments was a depressing soundtrack. It might even evoke a “terminal” situation ... certainly not what most couples would choose. When I present this material in my workshops and show the actual CD, it always gets quite a response. If you were thinking of buying this box set, consider that I just saved you at least $36, and maybe your relationship as well. Oh, yes. The name of this “killer” song is Symphony No. 6 (Pathetique) by Tchaikovsky. Forewarned is forearmed.
