As the changing rhythms of the seasons modulate the natural soundscape around us, it’s helpful sometimes to remember to breathe deeply, to allow the different aspect of space and silence to be felt, and heard, inside your being. With the pace of everything in our lives speeding up, it’s good to remember that even one minute spent doing the above exercise can pay marvelous dividends. It’s especially applicable to Type A personalities, who don’t have time to do a full twenty minute relaxation program, or to trundle down to the yoga center for a class. When you slow down a moment to breathe, you may also become aware of some sounds you might not have noticed before. Observe how they feel. Do they increase your stress? Not make a difference? Help you feel more relaxed? You don’t even need to make a judgement on whether one is good or bad. Just fine tuning your awareness is a good first step. You may well discover, however, that as you tune in a bit, you become aware that you are sensitive to more incoming stimuli than you might have thought. You may well discover, however, that as you tune in a bit, you become aware that you are sensitive to more incoming stimuli than you might have thought. If you're a long-time reader of The Monthly Aspectarian, you know that the subtle shifts called “Moon void of course” tend to be associated with a particular aspect of flow, or non-flow. The recent downsizing of Pluto’s astronomical reputation may already have stimulated a reply in another section of this month’s magazine. I'm certainly interested to read what Guy Spiro has to say about how this may or may not affect the astrological resonances. And Speaking of resonances, do you resonate to different music now that summer is over? Do you have “evergreens” that you listen to all year round? I’d be interested in reading your personal Top 10 favorites, in terms of what you listen to to keep yourself in tune.
Is Thought a Frequency? More and more scientific evidence is proving that it is. If you’ve seen the movie What the Bleep, you’ve seen some of the leading thinkers who are validating what ancient yogis, mystics, contemporary philosophers, and best-selling authors have said. If you’ve seen the images in water photographed by Dr. Masaru Emoto, you’ve seen “sound evidence,” as it were. I wish the film had included a section on cymatics as well. If it had, you would be familiar with the pioneering research conducted by Dr. Hans Jenny in Switzerland about fifty years before Dr. Emoto. Dr. Jenny photographed the way solids, liquids, and gases were affected by different instruments and different frequencies. Two of the most visually astounding were the photos of the same frequency note played by a violin and a french horn. Since a picture is worth a thousand words, let me suggest you check out the new website, www.cymatherapy.com for the latest developments in this field. I have just learned that they are holding their first-ever international conference October 21-22 in Atlanta. I just signed up to go, and check it out for myself. In l977, I was the first American to be introduced to this field when I was presenting workshops in England at the Body-Mind-Spirit Festival. It literally changed my life. The power of sound was no longer a “belief.” Here was proof! The ramifications of our understanding of the importance of frequency and resonance, I predict, will soon undergo a quantum leap. At the forefront is Dr. Bruce Lipton, whose best-selling book, The Biology of Belief, presents compelling evidence that the current chemical model of how DNA works may be secondary to the real “prime mover.” As is so often the case with paradigm-shifting research, there’s been a lot of resistance to allowing his message to get out to the public. Of course, that’s also been true about the field of sound healing. I’ll have more to say about both these issues in a future column. For now, stay tuned, and enjoy.
