How Happy Are You?

As I write this, we are approaching the July 4th holiday. Many of us are getting our vacation plans together or deciding which barbeque or picnic to attend. If nothing else, we’re looking forward to a day or two off. While the 4th summons up memories of parades, sunburn, and fireworks, it also stirs our sense of history and our hope for the dream we could be.

In times past, it’s been easier to take pride in our nation and take our role as world leader for granted than it is today. Sure, we had some hard times, but we had confidence that we’d bounce back, better than ever. These days we look around and wonder how we got so off track, and more importantly, how we get back on.

Today there is widespread distrust of our leadership, and we fear that the very foundation of our country is at risk. We are saddened that we are no longer well regarded throughout the world and cringe at the aggressive stance we’ve taken in foreign affairs. We don’t buy that our economy is healthy or that the war is going well, and we know that many laws are made to accommodate the powerful at our expense. Incomprehensively, we don’t, as a nation, feel compelled to do much about global warming or the effects of pollution. The list goes on. These are not our brightest days. In fact, many of the changes made in recent years were possible only in the shadow of fear that has become so pervasive.

Given all this, it’s easy to give in to despair and anger. What can one person do, after all? Adding more darkness in the form of fear and anger will only foster more darkness, and we know bad things grow in the dark. Are we really helpless?

I say no. One of the most powerful forces around is that of mass consciousness. While we may not have actively created our current situation, our lack of attention has allowed it to flourish. As a nation, we have allowed our fear to overcome our common sense, and we can decide to change that right now.

Let’s put an end to the madness. Let’s agree to devote some part of each day to prayer, meditation, or energy work, to share our light for the benefit of our nation and the world. Hating our leaders won’t do much; sending them wisdom is energy better spent. In our current state, it’s difficult for those in a position to do so to speak up. Let’s send them courage. Let’s send all the places in the world torn by violence our desire for peace, and to the earth, our love. Tens of thousands of people read The Monthly Aspectarian. If we urge our family, friends, and work associates to take part in this effort, to share their light, before long we can create a mighty force for good, one that influences those in power to lead, to act in our best interest, and to work for the good of all.
