Green Events

By Kathleen Ellis

December is a Solstice month; rejoice, then hibernate. Regular readers will note my devotion to proving that Winter Bicycling is possible and even enjoyable – this month we surely will have the chance to prove our mettle!

Green Tech University Seminars

Various dates, Chicago Center for Green Technology, 445 N. Sacramento Blvd., Chicago. www.cityofchicago.org/Environment/GreenTech.

The City of Chicago’s Center for Green Technology coordinates a series of seminars on urban ecology, specializing in certification and training programs to assist teachers, building contractors and community leaders stay current in their knowledge. This month the Center course schedule includes “Net Zero Energy Homes” (December 2), “Geothermal Systems for the Home” (December 4), “Marketing for the Sustainable Enterprise” (December 9), and “The Calumet Region: Coexistence of Nature, Industry & Community for a Sustainable Future”(December 11). Preregistration required, prices vary.

How To Get Started in Beekeeping

December 6, 1–3:30 p.m. Nisse Farm, 6000W Rd., Manteno, IL.  www.centerforsustainablecommunity.org

Ever think about keeping bees? Now is the perfect time to start thinking about collecting hive supplies and making plans. This workshop will help you start your adventure. The presenters are Julie Larsen, a beginning beekeeper, and Mark Hoffman, who will share his two decades of experience. Topics covered include equipment, hive management, seasonal duties, and extracting honey. $35, preregistration preferred.

Bike Winter Basics

December 10, 7–10 p.m., West Town Bikes. www.westtownbikes.org.

Year-round riding is possible and quite enjoyable with some preparation and know-how. Presenters Lauren Sailor and Martin Hazard will be on hand to answer questions, give tips, and allay your fears of frostbite. Best of all, West Town Bikes is a fully stocked bike shop, and you can use the tools to get your bike ready. No prior knowledge is needed and the workshop is free to the public. Class size limited to six on a first-come, first-served basis. Donations are welcome and support West Town Bikes’ youth programs.

Lakeview Alternative Christmas Bazaar

December 14, 12 noon–3 p.m., United Church of Christ, 615 W. Wellington Ave, Chicago.

This annual bazaar and craft fair features socially and environmentally conscious art, jewelry, toys, books and all kinds of gifts created by local artisans as well as fair-trade goods from all over the world. Baked goods, coffee and chocolate will also be on offer. Free admission.

Sixth Annual Holiday Toy Ride

December 19, Amlings Cycle, 8140 N. Milwaukee in Niles. http://amlingscycle.com.

Volunteers and extra bike trailers are needed. This fun early morning ride drew nearly opne hundred cyclists and collected one thousand toys for Toys for Tots last year, and you can help them meet their goal of collecting 1500 toys by supporting this event. Riders will gather at the bike shop early in the morning and haul the load to WGN Studios, and then go to the Mystic Celt in Lincoln Park for breakfast. Preregistration is available on the web site.

Logan Square Winter Bike Tour

December 27, 1 p.m., Centennial Monument at Milwaukee, Kedzie and Logan in Chicago.  www.bikewinter.org.

Explore Logan Square’s historic boulevards on a bicycle. This tour will feature the architecture and history of the area and will have stops at area landmarks. These bike tours happen in a different Chicago neighborhood each month. Free.
