It is Time to Soar Together:The Prophecy of the Condor and the Eagle

By Jennie Landfield and Vera Lopez

In every village and community they visited, the elders told them “We have been waiting for you.”

“Each of us is put here in this time and place to personally decide the future of humankind. Know that you yourself are essential to this World. Believe that! You yourself are desperately needed to save the soul of the world. Did you think you were put here for something less?”

A Call to Action

This is a heartfelt request to the awakened Chicago spiritual community, to unite together and activate the next phase of the prophecy of the Condor and the Eagle, taught to generations of Native Americans throughout this vast continent for over two thousand years.

Those who will read this article represent a diverse array of spiritual teachings, beliefs systems, and practices. We are all doing our best to understand our lives, and to manifest our purpose here on this planet, in this city, at this time. Beyond all these various teachings and methodologies, there is an undercurrent of commonality. There is, for most of us, the understanding and experience of the divinity, the pure awareness, the enlightened nature that exists within us all.

The times in which we are living may become more confusing and challenging before we experience the “harmony and understanding” of the Age of Aquarius. And yet, with phenomena such as The Secret introducing the Law of Attraction to millions of people, we are now in a position to use our interaction with this Law to focus beyond our individual prosperity, and include the deliberate creation of the quality of our world.    Abraham-Hicks clarifies this principle:

“Without exception, that which you give thought to is that which you begin to invite into your experience.” One of the greatest “secrets” to manifestation is to continually feel the joy of that which is desired before it has begun to appear, often despite what you actually see before your eyes. In respect to our world, what are we giving our attention and imagination to? What experiences are we creating for ourselves, and for each other?

At this stage in our city’s transformation, and as the age of illumination unfolds, this is a divine moment in time, to look beyond the differences between our various spiritual communities. Can we choose to actively create ways to come together as one larger and more potent energy? What might be necessary in order to accomplish this? What kind of power could be unleashed if we, the greater Chicago spiritual community, living here in the heart of America, all came together as One? What kind of projects could we undertake as active participants in the transformation of our world? How can we contribute to actualizing the promise of the ancient prophecy of the Condor and the Eagle, so pregnant with radiance and possibility at this moment in time?

Understanding the Prophecy

In fourteen hundred and ninety two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue. School children are taught that this voyage ended in the miraculous discovery of the “new world.” However, this continent was inhabited by Native Americans for thousands of years before the creation of tall sailing ships, able to cross the ocean, and bring “civilization” with them.

For the indigenous people of North, Central, and South America, the gradual arrival of these European visitors on their shores meant agony, destruction, death, and the loss of their ancestral customs and land. The ancient prophecy of the Condor and the Eagle was beginning to unfold. The Eagle (representing the mental and the material/technological world) would arrive on this continent, and over a five hundred year period, drive the Condor (representing the heart and the earth-connected indigenous people) to near extinction. The only hope for either to survive is to for them to soar together in the same sky. Only then can balance be restored to our Mother Earth.

Connecting indigenous and non-indigenous people has been a life-long mission for Vera Lopez, who has been taking groups to Peru for over nineteen years. “So many people have been called to experience Peru, Machu Picchu, and the other sacred sites of the Children of the Sun. Yes, the country is very beautiful, the people are kind and lovely, and the sites are powerful, but I always felt that there was something much deeper going on.”

During her journeys, Vera continued to learn more about the ancient prophecy from the shamans she works with, who provide sacred ceremony and experience in Incan tradition for her guests. “Peru is a land steeped in wisdom that is vital for our planet during these transitional times,” Vera expressed passionately. “The spiritual philosophy of the Andean world is the concept of duality: permanent opposition, but complementary, such as yin/yang, light/dark, man/woman, and earth/sky.

“I learned that this same principle of duality also applies to the prophecy of the Condor and the Eagle. Life in the Incan empire was measured by one thousand year cosmic cycles called Inti, which means “sun.” This thousand year cycle was then divided into halves, each referred to as a Pachakuti. I discovered that following the five hundred years of darkness, and after a period of transition, a new five hundred year period of illumination and light could be expected.”

Native Americans in Chicago Ignite the Passion

In 1989, a group of indigenous people living in Chicago felt the urgency of the approaching end date of the five hundred year prophecy. This date was recorded on the Sacred Stone Calendar of the Mexica people (this calendar is incorrectly referred to as the “Aztec Calendar” by anthropologists who unearthed it in what is presently known as Mexico). The calendar has time spans of 52 years. The last cycle was nearing its end on October 12, 1992—exactly five hundred years after the voyage of Christopher Columbus. The Chicago group organized, and incorporated under the name “Peace and Dignity Journeys.” Although there were many on-going dialogues within Native American communities all across the continent about the prophecy coming to an end, several individuals in Chicago chose to dedicate themselves to intense action.

The Condor (South America) and the Eagle (North America) also refer to the indigenous people of the continent. It was prophesized that the reuniting of the red nations of North, Central, and South America, would create a union of tears—healing tears that would fortify their spirit, body, and thought. In Chicago, Alphonso Perez initiated the idea of an intercontinental prayer, a Spiritual Run. Native people from South America and North America would run on the earth, passing and accumulating prayer bundles from many tribes along the way, and ending up in a ceremony in Central America, outside of Mexico City, at the great Aztec site of Teotihuaca.

Alphonso Perez went in the four directions of North America, speaking to the tribal elders, and Francisco Melo journeyed to South America. Aurelio Diaz Tekpankalli also journeyed to hold many ceremonies to create the Run. In every village and community they visited, the elders told them “We have been waiting for you.” The Intercontinental Run was a huge success. It occurred in 1992, at the end of the five hundred year period, and ran from Alaska all way down to the Aztec site in Mexico, and from Chile and Argentina all the way north to the same location. The run is still occurring every four years.

Vera remembers: “In 1996, I joined my friend Don Valerio Cohaila, a medicine man from Peru, and participated in the big ceremony in Teotihuacan. Don Valerio and Aurelio worked together for many years to unite the energy of the Condor and the Eagle. When I saw all the natives from South, Central and North America in a big circle of love, sharing their most sacred bundles and praying for peace and dignity on earth, I was deeply touched. Their level of commitment and their willingness to walk their talk is pure and filled with integrity. They are together for one mission, to allow illumination to guide the children of today and tomorrow. I knew at that moment—while holding hands with thousands of people—that we are the ones we have been waiting for. We are the ones!”

What is Ours to Do?

Vera Lopez and one of her groups held a sacred ceremony at Machu Picchu on 07/07/07. Vera’s Incan teacher Kucho told her that the transitional time between the five hundred year periods ended on that day. Is it a coincidence that on that same day, Machu Picchu was announced as one of the new Seven Wonders of the World, and Al Gore facilitated the largest internationally telecast concert in history, to raise awareness about global warming? It was a day of international community, an inspiring day of true hope and light for our world.

According to the Incan calendar and the Peruvian shamans, we are already in the new five hundred year period of light. In a letter encouraging one of his disciples, Nichiren Daishonin, a great Buddhist teacher in the 12th century, wrote: “The darker the night, the closer the dawn. The colder the winter, the closer the spring.” Let us keep our attention on the sunrise, on the season that is on its way, no matter what obstacles seem to present themselves. With collective intention, feeling and imagining the joy of the changes that have “already happened” in our world, we can attract a wonderful reality. “Then peace will guide the planets, and love will steer the stars ...”

The Incan prophecy says that now, in this age, when the Eagle of the North and the Condor of the South fly together, the earth will awaken. How can we discover ways to be closer to the earth, to connect more deeply with our hearts and with each other, to restore love and humanity to our technological world?  If we would like to actively contribute to the awakening of Pachamama (Mother Earth), we can begin by joining with indigenous people in ceremony, learning from them, and honoring the wisdom that they have been holding for us all of these years. The question may not be how quickly we can access the internet, but how effectively we can reach out and connect with each other’s hearts. As we direct our attention to the light of love and truth, we will have more and more to offer to our Native American friends. With this awakening, imagine the exciting possibilities for restoring wholeness to our Mother Earth—to the oceans, to the trees, to the animals and to the blessed land!  And finally, we can then turn our attention to using the awesome potential of technology to support new ways of realizing ourselves as the divine, enlightened humans we are here to be.

On March 28th, Vera Lopez has arranged with Don Valerio Cohaila to conduct an ancient Incan ceremony here in Chicago. He is very busy traveling all over the globe conducting and participating in ceremonies to bring in the new energy, and he rearranged his schedule to be here with us. Vera describes the ceremony: “There is a silence in the cold dark of winter. It is good to be in reflection and contemplation. And then there is a moment when the sun shines into the darkness—there is a breakthrough of life. Green leaves begin breaking through everywhere. All life returns. There is joy, there is enchantment, there is passion! During the ceremony, everyone will experience this happening within themselves. The leaves, the green, the joy, the birds, the flowers, the light! We can come out to play, to experience life. We will give thanks to Pachamama in advance for the return of life, just after the Spring Equinox. The shaman will be blessing everyone present with a full rebirth.”

“The Condor and the Eagle Soar Together” will also include presentations of indigenous and non-indigenous music, puppetry, and dance. We would like to surprise Don Valerio with a joyful and united energy from the greater Chicago spiritual community, with a message that he can share with the Native American people throughout this continent: “The Eagle is awake, eager to be one with the Condor as we soar together in the springtime sky!”

The ceremony begins at 7:30 p.m., and is followed by the closing reception of a beautiful art exhibit of photographs, ceramics, and paintings entitled: “Peru: The Doorway to Light”
