Hot Off the Presses! Larry Dossey’s The Power of Premonitions

As I write this column, Larry Dossey’s new book, The Power of Premonitions: How Knowing the Future Can Shape Our Lives, is, as they say, “close and yet so far.” I heard about Dossey’s new book from a friend and decided to try to get a sneak preview prior to its April 30th release date by going to www.dosseydossey.com. The official Larry Dossey, M.D., website not only features information about this book, but provides a glimpse of the work of this pioneer in spirituality and health research.

The home page features Dossey’s biography with this key quote:

“I used to believe that we must choose between science and reason on one hand, and spirituality on the other, in how we lead our lives. Now I consider this a false choice. We can recover the sense of sacredness, not just in science, but in perhaps every area of life.”

— Larry Dossey, M.D., from Reinventing Medicine

The biography also emphasizes the contributions that Dr. Dossey has made. For example, before his book Healing Words was published in 1993, only three U.S. medical schools had courses devoted to exploring the role of religious practice and prayer in health. Currently, nearly 80 medical schools have instituted such courses. Many of these utilize Dr. Dossey's works as textbooks. These include: The Extraordinary Healing Power of Ordinary Things, Healing Beyond the Body, Be Careful What You Pray For... You Just Might Get It, and Prayer is Good Medicine.

I started my sneak preview by clicking on the “Books” link. The Power of Premonitions is described as more than an examination of case studies—it reveals the world of science and research that proves the human capacity for knowing the future.

The Dossey quote in this section is:

“I'm not asking you to take anything in this book on blind faith, but to open yourself up to the possibility of premonitions and the evidence supporting them. Listen to the stories people tell. Explore the research that demonstrates our capacity to sense the future. Ponder the implications of mind outside of time. Invite premonitions into your life and see what happens. If you do so humbly and reverently, your life will likely become more premonition-prone, and you may touch that exquisite, infinite realm to which premonitions, now as always, are a door.”

Another sneak preview section is “Dr. Dossey's latest book: The Power of Premonitions.” Click on that and you can download an interview with Larry Dossey about his new book.

One of the interesting questions was “Why did you write this book?” Dossey answered:

“I actually tried not to write it. I largely ignored this stuff for years, but this didn’t

work very well. My own experiences of premonitions grabbed me and wouldn’t

let go.

“During my first year in medical practice as an internist, I had a dream premonition

that shook me up and made me realize the world worked differently than I had

been taught.

“Briefly, I dreamed about a detailed event in the life of the young son of one of my physician colleagues. It turned out to be so accurate it scared me. There was no way I could have known about the event ahead of time.

“Then patients of mine began telling me about their own premonitions. Even my physician colleagues would occasionally open up and share their premonitions with me.

“So I decided this was a well-kept secret in medicine that needed telling. The time is right for this book because science has come onto the premonitions scene. There are now hundreds of experiments that confirm premonitions, which have been replicated by researchers all over the world. So there’s a new story to tell. It’s no longer only about people’s experiences, but it’s also about science. Many people still think this stuff is just mumbo-jumbo and that there’s no science to back it up. It’s the “everybody knows” argument—“everybody knows” you can’t see the future, so proof of premonitions cannot possibly exist. That’s wrong. We now know we can see the future, because that’s what careful scientific studies show.”

What People are Saying

The “Dr. Dossey's latest book” section also includes a link to Amazon.com. Click on that and you can read what some of the folks who got a chance to preview the book are saying. These include:

“Dr. Larry Dossey is the world's leading expert in space-time mystery. In this compulsively readable, thoroughly researched work, you will be left with tantalizing questions. Can there be free will and premonitions both? What is the nature of time? Rarely does a book come along that keeps you on the edge of your seat and stimulates thought like this one. Don't miss it!"

— Joan Borysenko, Ph.D., Your Soul's Compass and Saying Yes to Change

“For anyone who is interested in knowing about the deeper meaning of our existence, this book is a must read. Once again, Larry, being the pioneer that he is, has written a classic.”

— Deepak Chopra, M.D., Jesus: A Story of Enlightenment

“In his crystal clear style, he explains why the paradoxical idea of knowing the future is no longer based on mere conjecture or fantastic stories, and why cultivating this startling ability is perhaps your most important birthright.”

— Dean Radin, PhD, Senior Scientist, Institute of Noetic Sciences

“This wonderful book brings reason and wisdom to bear on experiences that no one understands, yet which really happen. Thank goodness that Dr Larry Dossey is not afraid to wrestle with a subject that most scientists prefer to ignore, but which tells us that there is more to life and mind than our philosophies have dreamed of.”

—Rupert Sheldrake, biologist and author

My Advice: By the time you read this column The Power of Premonitions will be available at bookstores and on-line. Buy, the book, for sure. But before you do, get your own sneak preview at www.dosseydossey.com.
