If you are reading this, you are likely a spiritual seeker. You may be the one in your family or circle with the most “out there” ideas, not only about religion, but politics, the environment, health, you name it. You probably have given thought to your belief system and are open to incorporating new ideas or perspectives as they show up in your life. There are lots of us, and our numbers are expanding.

In contrast, there is a large segment of the world population that is holding fast to old ways of thinking. They take comfort in a

deity that watches over them and demands obedience. They see the Bible as the inerrant word of God and draw a sharp line between those who are like them and those who are not. At the extreme of this group are those who deny the evidence of science and claim the world is just 6000 years old.

I know I’m using the word incorrectly, but to use it in its popular form—the world is schizophrenic. We’re moving toward more moderation and tolerance while also trending toward the more conservative and

rigid. It’s like investigating how to make people live longer in the midst of a population crisis, or inventing labor saving machines when much of the work force is unemployed. We’re going in two opposite directions at once.
